Shelley Hansen - Lady of Lines

Frederic Chopin - Polish Composer/Pianist

As a child I learned piano ... and like most pianists, I quickly fell in love with the musical poetry of Frederic Chopin (1810-1849).

No composer understood the piano so well. When I play his exquisite melodies, my piano becomes more than an instrument ... it becomes an extension of myself ... a living, breathing expression of songs that speak straight to the heart.

This is my tribute to Chopin ... in the form of a Petrarchan Sonnet.

Sonnet for Chopin

I was a child when I first heard your name,
and haltingly with little fingers found
your notes, and the enchantment of your sound.
Oh! How could music ever be the same?
Into my soul like liquid amber came
the heartsong of your spirit, tightly bound
with love and joy and anguish all around -
transcending lands and centuries and fame.
Your melody, cascading through the years,
brings lightness to the hearts of the forlorn.
Your voice cries jubilation to the free,
and to the captive gives the strength to mourn.
While I, in pensive mood, through smiles or tears
hear my own heart in your sweet poetry.
